Early Bird Registration Ends THIS WEEK!

Early Bird Registration for the 15th International Erlang User Conference ends on 15th October, so you have only one week to save SEK 450 (excl VAT)!

With 18 speakers and 14 talks, you will walk away from the conference knowing much more about Erlang and its applications. Among the speakers are: Rusty Klophaus (Basho Technologies) with his 'Nitrogen and Riak By Example' talk and Guy Wiener from Ben-Gurion University who will talk about putting self-application to work in Erlang. If you would like to prepare for the conference we recommend the three-day Erlang training courses (Erlang Express, ErlangOTP) or QuickCheck for Erlang Developers, which will be just before the Conference. What's more, the day after the conference you are welcome to participate in the Erlang and Test-Driven Development Tutorials. These tutorials are part of the EU-funded ProTest project. So much for so little!

Reminder: We have over 220 registered delegates already! Places are running out. Register now to avoid missing out.

Joe Armstrong and Ulf Wiger at Øredev

A week before the Erlang User Conference, there will be another very interesting conference in Sweden – Øredev.  Øredev is a conference  focused on the software development process, where nearly 1000 programmers, developers, engineers, educators, testers and managers gather to share their knowledge and experience. This year’s speakers will focus on delivering methodological approaches or technical knowledge that you can put into practice in your daily work.

The conference will be held in Malmo, from 2nd to 6th November 2009. The Erlang language will be represented by Joe Armstrong and Ulf Wiger.
On Friday, 5th November between 14:15 and 15:05, Ulf Wiger (Erlang Training and Consulting CTO) will give a talk about Message-passing Concurrency in Erlang. In this talk, he will describe the principles behind Erlang-style Concurrency - what problems it was designed to solve, and how it fundamentally changes the way you go about structuring your programs. He will illustrate how to achieve great scalability on multicore and in compute clouds, without sacrificing clarity or your own sanity. Two days earlier, on Wednesday Joe Armstrong will talk about Erlang - the language and its applications and on Tuesday will give a complete Erlang course designed for beginners.

Joe Armstrong and Simon Peyton Jones discuss Erlang and Haskell

Recently a very interesting interview with Joe Armstrong and Simon Peyton Jones has been released.

In the interview Joe and Simon discuss the Erlang and Haskell languages, compare them and explain the origins and the development history of each. They also make some surprising revelations.

The discussion has been recorded at the Erlang Factory conference in London, which Erlang Training and Consulting Ltd. organised this year.

Erlang Blog

Tim Bray, Director of Web Technologies at SUN Microsystems, has written a blog article about what a programming language should look like in order to bring concurrency into the programming mainstream, and become "the Java of concurrency". Bray's starting point is the HECS (Haskell, Erlang, Clojure and Scala) languages. Erlang's error handling principles receive special attention: "The thing is, once you’ve worked with Erlang a little bit, the notion of trying to deliver any concurrent system without those sorts of monitors and failovers and so on begins to be seriously worrying. My personal bet is that whatever we end up with is going to have to have a good story to tell in this space.'''

OOPSLA is an annual conference covering topics on object-oriented programming systems, languages and applications. This year OOPSLA is offering a special tutorial incentive: sign up for three tutorials and get the fourth tutorial FREE. If you'd like to take advantage of this offer, here you can read more.
