Erlang News

Erlang/OTP R13B02 was released today. Apart from bugfixes and minor optimizations for multicore, R13B02 offers some significant improvements to Dialyzer and the target system generation utility 'reltool'. There are also some nice new functions such as Blowfish encryption support and an efficient way to do line-oriented input from files.

In the new release of Reltool (0.5) there is a severe bug that may cause your source files to be deleted. Please, apply the patch before you use this version of Reltool. The bug is triggered when you generate a target system with archive files and your library directories are given with absolute paths. (Library directories are given with the ERL_LIBS environment variable or with the lib_dirs configuration parameter.)

Ted Leung gave a keynote speech at DjangoCon 2009 in Portland on Sep 10. Django is a Python-based Web development framework designed for rapid development. In his talk, Leung gave examples of competing frameworks that the Django community might learn from: Rails (Ruby), Lift (Scala), WebMachine (Erlang), Nitrogen (Erlang) and CouchApps (Erlang).

Facebook has released as Open Source the Python-based web server, called Tornado, that is used by FriendFeed. It is touted as an exceptionally fast and scalable server, ideal for real-time web services. Lev Walkin has written a blog article where he compares Tornado to a basic Erlang-based web server, and finds the Erlang version equally fast and easier to scale.

Rusty Klophaus, father of the Nitrogen web framework and now working at Basho Technologies, has written an article about the extended process dictionary gproc, written by our CTO Ulf Wiger. Gproc is maintained by Ulf with the help of Joseph Wayne Norton at Geminimobile Inc. Expect more news on this front in the near future.

Survey powered by Erlang and IM!

A client of ours is doing a survey on the Analysis of Voice as a User Interface (VUI) for mobile apps & devices. We could not resist, and had to add an IM component powered by Erlang and EjabberD. To try it out, visit here and choose IM survey. It'll take <10 minutes of your time, and we (and they) would love your feedback..

All participants have an option to be entered into a FREE PRIZE DRAW to win £50 Amazon Vouchers and have an option to share in the results of the research.
