Books

Erlang Programming, by Francesco Cesarini and Simon Thomas has been released! The first review of the book has been posted on the Erlang Inside Blog: "Erlang Programming is a worthy contender for the best Erlang book, and evidence of the growth and maturity of the community". Read the review here.

Open Source Light Weight HTTP 1.1 Client

After recent experiences and discussions with the Erlang community, Erlang Training and Conculsing have developed and released an HTTP/1.1 lightweight client. You can find more information in the Erlang Open Source section of our website or in the contributions section on Trapexit.

Tutorials

Sean McEvoy has written a tutorial on the new real time tracing tool Inviso. Inviso is a powerful tool for tracing distributed systems. You can find it on trapexit together with many other tutorials and "how tos".

Dor Kalev has written a blog post titled "Erlang made stupid simple for Ruby programmers". Apparently, he hit the right level for many people, and has now followed up with a screencast. We warmly recommend it!

The Erlang Language

Erlang OTP R13B01 was released 10 June 2009. It offers some very promising improvements.

  • Message passing over Distributed Erlang is now much more concurrent. Message encode and decode can now be done in parallel, and the atom cache has been redesigned in order to allow much finer-grain concurrency.
  • ETS tables now support object-level locking on updates, and search and iteration functions no longer require a table lock.
  • An experimental SAX parser has been added to xmerl. This parser sports a much simpler interface and several times better performance than the original xmerl.
