Krakow Erlang Factory Lite - 2 March 2012

Returning for a third year, the Krakow Erlang Factory Lite is a meeting devoted to Erlang and its potential. It is also a chance for you to learn, socialise and network with some fantastic names.

The Erlang Factory Lite is open to everybody with any level of Erlang experience from newbies to experienced developers. Why not come along and meet up with like-minded developers and architects and find out how more firms are using Erlang/OTP to solve previously intractable problems.

For those of you who are not familiar with Erlang yet, here you can find information about the language in Polish and here in English.

We are talking talk submissions, so if you have something you would like to share with the Erlang Community, then please submit a talk.

18:00 José Valim - Elixir: Simple Object Orientation and charming syntax on top of Erlang
Elixir is a language built on top of the Erlang VM with Prototype-based Object Orientation and a syntax similar to scripting languages like Python and Ruby. In this talk, José Valim will present Elixir and its features, discuss some of the trade-offs done when designing the language and provide some implementation details.

Aboout José Valim
José Valim is the lead developer of Plataforma Tecnologia, a web consultancy firm based in Brazil, and a known member of the Ruby community as a speaker, writer open source developer and collaborator of the Ruby on Rails web framework. He currently lives in a calm city in Poland with his wife, surrounded by dogs and cats.

There will then be time for socilising and networking over a few drinks.

18:00 Konrad Kaplita is giving the talk "Conquering embedded devices with Erlang"

In today's world embedded devices are ubiquitous. With falling prices of very powerful embedded devices, comes the question of their possible applications. We will try to present how far Erlang could go into embedded world. We will discuss pros and cons of using Erlang for embedded development, present devices that already run Erlang on them (including Android phones) and the current status of research projects that uses Erlang and embedded devices to build robust adhoc network.

About Konrad Kaplita
Konrad Kaplita is currently a student of Computer Science at the AGH - University of Science and Technology in Krakow. He is interested in dynamically typed languages and functional programming. Mix of these interests helped him discover Erlang. He is now using Erlang both in university projects and professional work as Erlang Software Engineer at Erlang Solutions.

18:45 Emacs Festa

A couple of Erlang programmers will give 2 minute presentations on their Emacs configuration, which helps them develop Erlang code.

 

There will then be time for socilising and networking over a few drinks.

Cracow Grid Workshop ’10 11th – 13th October (Krakow, Poland)

Michal Ptaszek of Erlang Solutions will be presenting at Cracow Grid Workshop ‘10, 11th-13th October.
 
Held at the Conference Centre at the AGH University of Science and Technology, the CGW aims to support the community of researchers, developers, and practitioners who work in the fascinating field of e-Science, grid systems, and their applications.

Evening School of Erlang in Krakow (Poland)Evening School of Erlang in Krakow (Poland)
On 23rd March 2010 the Evening School of Erlang begins in Krakow. The Evening School of Erlang is a series of Erlang classes which take place twice a week. It is aimed at full time students who are  interested in programming in Erlang.

Classes consist of lectures and exercises, during which participants will be solving programming tasks. The first class will be held on 26th March. Dates of the next classes will be provided at the first meeting. During the classes, each participant should have his/her own laptop. Participation in activities is free for full time students.

At the end of the Evening School of Erlang each participant will be able to to take the Erlang Foundation Certificate, organized by Erlang Solutions.
26 January 2010:
NKtalk (Krakow User Group, Poland)
Our first Krakow Erlang User Group Meeting in 2010 will take place next Tuesday, 26th January. The meeting will be dedicated to NKtalk. NKtalk is a  web-based IM service, which Nasza Klasa (NK), Poland's biggest social networking site, with over 13 million active users, launched in mid-January this year.

The presentation will cover the technical challenges which the developers faced while creating the service. Bartek Puzon will explain why the Erlang language was chosen. He will also describe how communication within NKtalk works and he will talk about the usage of XMPP in web applications.  

The presentation will be held  on 26th January 2010 at 18:00 in Room 126 at the office building on  Al. 3 Maja 9 in Krakow. For directions, visit our Contact page.  After the presentation we will go to a nearby students club,  Zaczek for drinks and snacks. Admission is free but advance registration is required.

Erlang Factory Lite Krakow 2009 (Krakow, Poland)
With great pleasure we would like to invite you to the Erlang Factory Lite – the first Erlang day in Krakow!

The meeting will take place at the AGH - University of Science and Technology on Wednesday, 25th November 2009. Erlang Factory Lite is free of charge, you don't need to register either. So, if you want to learn more about Erlang, its potential and its usage in commercial products, come and listen to Ulf Wiger's talk on Erlang's Journey to the Clouds. Meet us in Krakow!



30 September 2009:
Bridging the gap between Jabber/XMPP and Gadu-Gadu (Krakow User Group, Poland)

On Wednesday, 30th September 2009, during the Krakow Erlang User Group Meeting Mietek will give a talk about bridging the gap between Jabber/XMPP and Gadu-Gadu by way of extending ejabberd.  Starting with an overview of the XMPP architecture and protocol, the talk will continue with tutorials on writing ejabberd modules and interfacing Erlang with C libraries, to conclude with a discussion of Mietek's XMPP/GG gateway module.


PLAN
Introduction to Jabber/XMPP:
- Network architecture overview;
- Protocol overview:
        - Message, presence and iq stanzas;
        - Dispelling the mysteries of presence subscriptions;
        - Inter-protocol communication with gateways.

ejabberd as the leading XMPP server implementation:
- Tutorial on writing modules:
        - Simple example (interactive);
- fxmpp - a library simplifying writing modules.

Interlude - introduction to Erlang ports:
- Tutorial on writing ports in C:
        - Simple example (interactive);
- fgg - a port for communicating with Gadu-Gadu, built on libgadu.

Back to ejabberd:
- mod_gg - a gateway module between XMPP and GG.

14 July 2009:
Erlang Web (Krakow, Poland)
Next Tuesday, 14 July 2009 a meeting of the Krakow Erlang User Group will take place. Michal Zajda will give a talk on Erlang Web, which is an open source web application framework for Erlang programming language: http://www.erlang-web.org/. Michal will present the basic features of Erlang Web and will give a demo on how to create the application.

The meeting will start at 17:00,  in the office building on Al. 3 Maja 9 in Krakow, Room 126. For directions, visit our Contact page.  After the presentation, we will go to Zaczek, students club , where we will talk about interesting projects which were presented at the Erlang Factory conference in London.

22 April 2009:
Certification Exam (Krakow, Poland)
Erlang Training and Consulting organizes exam, which tests the candidate’s understanding of the core Erlang programming language. Successful candidates gain Erlang Foundation Certificate. You can find out more about the certification programme here.

The exam follows classes of the Erlang University, which was hosted by ETC during March and April and gave a chance to study basics of the Erlang programming language.
